Last Thursday may very well have been the last time I ever teach in front of a classroom. A couple of months ago I figured out that my passion for teaching wasn’t strong enough to continue forth in the elementary education program. However, I must say that teaching students in the Czech Republic was a pretty good way to end my teaching career. Last semester I almost dreaded the idea of standing in front of a classroom (hence my need to switch majors) but I can honestly say I enjoyed every minute of my experience teaching English to the Czech students. It was a difficult experience. Throwing together a last minute lesson plan and not knowing the proficiency level of the students, however, made the end result that much more rewarding. Although Jennifer and I had some trouble communicating our purpose to the students, I feel that we had an overall successful lesson under the circumstances. Even with the language barrier (more so on our part than theirs) the students seemed to really enjoy the lesson and having us there. Teaching them a little bit about our home brought a little more appreciation to North Carolina. Not only did we teach them about North Carolina but they taught us how to say Czech words properly, which I never mastered but tried nonetheless. That is one of the most important aspects about teaching to me. Not only do you teach the students, but you learn from the students, and although I may never stand in front of a classroom of elementary students, that doesn’t mean I’ll never teach.
