The Countdown Begins

I feel like just the other day I was saying we had only been here two weeks and now there’s only two weeks left. It’s crazy how time flies! Last week was yet another eventful week with our EDP 304 midterm, the public transportation strike, and everyone taking off for another weekend trip. Monday was a busy day trying to do a little sightseeing and study for the EDP 304 midterm. As I walked around Petrin Hill and the Prague Zoo, I tried to think of different examples of things we had learned in class---mnemonics, Piaget’s theories, monitoring, elaboration, etc. I created stories with different animals to help me better understand assimilation and accommodation. I also thought of ill-defined and well-defined problems. This strategy of incorporating real-life experiences helped me to gain a deeper understanding of the terms that I thought might be on the midterm. It also made me think more about what I was looking at rather than just carrying on like an everyday tourist.

On Tuesday, our ELM 350 class went to the Museum of Communism and worked on our test construction skills. We had to write 5 multiple choice, 5 true-false, and a matching exercise. This gave me my first taste of what creating a test for an elementary school class will be like. I learned that trying to generate well-constructed questions can be quite difficult. It also made me realize that I needed to get busy working on my Test Construction project because it was going to take much longer than I had planned. I really enjoyed the museum exhibition and learned a lot about the effects of communism on the Czech Republic through this exercise. I’m hoping to be able to use some of the information I learned in my class project.

I was a little bummed that Prague Pursuit had to be moved, but I’m looking forward to the adventures in store for us on Tuesday!
