A Day at a Czech School

Our educational psychology class had quite the experience Wednesday. We had the opportunity to visit a Czech school just outside of Prague. Despite the fact that we had to leave at 6:15 in the morning to get there, we had such a great time and I learned so much about the culture. It was very interesting to view the differences between a Czech school and an American school - from the school schedule to the teaching methods to even the dress code. I also learned that students are only required to go to school from first to ninth grade. They are allowed to go to high school afterwards but they do not have it at the same school. We were able to sit in on a fifth grade English class and it was so fascinating to see how quickly the students had picked up the English language and how well they were able to construct sentences. Most of us also had the chance to teach an English class while we were at the school. Along with Lauren and Pooja, I helped teach a group of 6th graders some American sports and famous athletes from each sport. Even though our group of students did not know much English, they knew all of the sports and surprisingly, they even knew who a few of the famous athletes were. I was impressed that they already had a little bit of knowledge about our country at such a young age, I wish I had had a chance to learn more than I did about other cultures when I was younger as well.
