Visiting the Museum of Communism was a very powerful experience for me. History is not a subject I am very fond of and often times I overlook the importance of it. Here I was given a realistic account of communism as it was experienced by Czechoslovakia and Prague in particular. We walk around every day in one of the most beautiful cities in the world and often times we never think twice about the tragedy that occurred on these streets some 20 years ago. The video spoke the strongest to me. Brutality in a sense never seems real. You hear accounts of hatred all the time, but you can never really fathom the intensity of it. Watching the video, and seeing the evil that was consumed by these people was amazing yet heartbreaking. What causes people to act out of such hatred? History gets sugar coated many times and it’s up to educators to do their best to teach the intensity of history even when the truth and the facts aren’t so pretty.
